While the main focus may
be on cancer when dealing with problems of the prostate gland, it can also be
the site of infection and inflammation. Prostatitis is a benign condition, but
it is far from inconsequential. Prostatitis can strike men of any age to cause
problems that range from acute infection with high fever to chronic inflammation
with persistent pain. To complicate matters, prostatitis may also trigger false
alarms about cancer by elevating prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, which
only serves to contribute to the mental stress of those who suffer from this
infection. To confuse the issue even more, prostatitis is actually four
diseases, the most common of which fortunately lends itself to easy diagnosis
and effective treatment. While two forms of prostatitis (ABP and CBP) are caused
by bacteria, the other two (NBP and PD) have no known cause.
